Examining “Sell in May and Go Away”

Have you ever heard the expression, “Sell in May and Go Away”?

For years, I have been told many times that stocks lose money during the summer months. This seasonality could be due to a number of factors, but does a pattern exist? In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to download data from Yahoo! Finance, build a table, and analyze the data. This tutorial is for beginning or intermediate users. The formulas used include AVERAGE, SUMIFS, and VLOOKUP. This tutorial is illustrated using Microsoft Excel 2016, but earlier version should work as well.

This tutorial is designed to be simple and not overly cumbersome. It is for informational purposes only and is not considered financial advice. The illustration is based on price only S&P 500 data and does not reflect dividends received.

I look forward to any feedback. Please let me know if you have any questions, or have ideas for future models.

Enjoy!
